Jesminder “Jess” Bhamra
Jess is the 18 year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Bhamra and the sister of Pinkie Bhamra. Although her parents want her to be a doctor and a traditional Indian girl, she has a strong passion for the classic English sport of football and plays it as a hobby in the local park with her good friend Tony and some other boys from their district in Hounslow, London. She grew up in a traditional Indian household and family and although her influences growing up were her sister and mother who couldn’t be more different to Jess she still keeps her strong love for the sport which her mother so detests. Her role model is David Beckham (hence the movie title; Bend it Like Beckham) and much to her mother’s annoyance, has pictures of him all over her room. She is not afraid to bend the rules to be herself, and continues to chase her dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
Quotes:
Joe: Where do you normally play?
Jess: In the park
Joe: No … I meant what position?
