Joe was a football player himself before a knee injury pulled him out of the game forever. He is what the Indian culture calls a ‘gora’, meaning fair or light skinned. He has a father with incredibly high expectations of him, expectations that Joe sometimes struggles to satisfy. After his injury stopped him from playing, Joe founded a soccer team for girls called the Hounslow Harriers. Joe is always telling Jess that living to please your family isn't always a good thing. He constantly refers to his father and his knee injury throughout the duration of the film. Jules says she used to like Joe, but not anymore. This misconception brews conflict between Jess and Jules, and later, as the result of a misunderstanding, between Mrs Paxton and Jules.
